The Russian capital inaugurated this Tuesday the eighth edition of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF), a strategic meeting focused on the stability of the global energy market. The event commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the organization and brings together delegations from various producing nations.
During his opening speech, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, highlighted the relevance of the block, noting according to Telesur that member countries concentrate “70 percent of the world's proven natural gas reserves and represent 38 percent of global production.” The president also warned of the risks derived from coercive measures and attacks against supply infrastructures.
For their part, the attending leaders addressed the need to consolidate multilateral cooperation in the face of geopolitical pressures and the impact of unilateral sanctions on the international economy. Representatives of nations such as Iran and Venezuela stressed the importance of guaranteeing sovereignty over natural resources and fostering stable trade alliances.
The participating authorities reaffirmed their commitment to promote technological development and joint investment to optimize the hydrocarbon value chain. The summit will continue to develop working groups aimed at strengthening the role of natural gas in the global energy transition.
