This Friday, the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil rejected the request submitted by the defense of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro to return his passport to travel to Israel between May 12 and 18.
The request was submitted by Bolsonaro's lawyer, Fabio Wajngarten, through a letter addressed to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, based on the fact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had invited the former Brazilian president to an event next May, making it necessary to return the passport.
In this regard, de Moraes replied that “it is absolutely premature to remove the imposed restriction”, during an investigation into Bolsonaro's responsibility in the plot hatched to ignore the 2022 election results and promote an uprising that would restore him to power after losing the elections to his rival and successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In their petition to the Supreme Federal Court, the former president's lawyers assured that the proposed trip would not jeopardize the judicial processes he currently faces, since he had appointments scheduled after his scheduled return date. The request does not specify the event, but the period coincides with Israel's Independence Day, TELESUR reports on its website.
