Through the Great Venezuela Bella Mission, with the support of the government of Mérida, rehabilitation work is being carried out on the stone chapel, located in San Rafael de Mucuchí de Mérida. To date, 95% progress has been made.

The chapel is a religious and artistic icon, as well as being a cultural heritage and a great tourist attraction, made by the artist Juan Félix Sánchez, who is being intervened for the first time. The regional director of the Great Venezuela Bella Mission, Andrés Rodrigo, said that “we have respected the methods and construction material of the work, on February 18 it celebrates 40 years since its creation.”

Rodrigo explained that a survey of the work was carried out to verify what the critical points were, “due to its useful life and damage, we began with the restructuring of the perimeter wall, then the construction of the retaining walls was carried out, (...) we tried to be as least invasive as possible, respecting the original construction systems used by the original author, Juan Félix Sánchez”.

In a press release from the regional government, he described that the roof had serious damage due to leaks, so it was decided to replace it, the new beams and straps were replaced with thicker wood to provide stability, the machimbration was carried out with local cane, concrete and soil were used, then waterproofing and finally the installation of the tiles”.
