On October 24, 1788, the state of Zulia saw the birth of one of the greatest patriots in history, General Rafael Urdaneta, a fundamental figure in the Independence of Venezuela and New Granada, for his great qualities in military strategy and for having assumed the role of statesman in the difficult, last and decisive era of Gran Colombia, of which he was president.
In one of his speeches, the Eternal Commander Hugo Chávez described this distinguished Venezuelan as “one of the most loyal generals that Bolivar had, one of the greatest warriors and statesmen of that heroic day of our first independence”, but the Father of the Fatherland himself considered him the most faithful of his officers.
His revolutionary feat began when he joined the group of officers commanded under then-Brigadier Simon Bolivar, who planned to liberate Venezuela in the so-called Admirable Campaign, a successful plan that, together with the first Battle of Carabobo, among others, allowed Urdaneta to be promoted to Major General in January 1815.
In 1821, he liberated the province of Coro and continued to San Carlos, where Bolívar, already a fighting partner, was preparing a concentration of forces to defeat the realist army in Carabobo and finally remove it from Venezuela. Urdaneta was the General who, with the exception of the Liberator, toured the national territory the most with the arms of the Republic.
