Protests in Azerbaijan against the ban on the use of the Islamic veil in public schools

Hundreds of citizens mobilized this Tuesday in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, to protest against restrictions imposed by the Government on the use of hijab in state educational institutions, following the amendment of school uniform regulations approved in September to veto garments linked to faith, Telesur said.
Local communities and social organizations reported that the prohibition of religious clothing represents a policy of persecution and intolerance against the Muslim population, violating the fundamental rights of families and freedom of worship in the country.
Referring to the demonstrations and the deployment of security forces in the immediate vicinity of the campuses, the Azerbaijani Ministry of the Interior reported that “some citizens confronted school employees, caused damage to schools and tried to interrupt classes” during the days of complaint.
