Social groups and demonstrators set up a camp at Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Spain, with the aim of protesting against the serious crisis of access to housing and the continuing evictions. The measure seeks to pressure state, regional and municipal governments to adopt structural reforms that put an end to rentism and stop financial speculation in the real estate market.
“The movement seeks to generate popular power to pressure institutions and expel investment funds from the sector,” Telesur says of the spokespersons of the organizing groups during the day of protest. They also highlighted that collective action seeks to change current regulatory frameworks and eradicate the action of vulture funds in urban areas.
Social mobilization gained strength after the widespread indignation caused by the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman who was expelled on a stretcher from her residence located in the Retiro neighborhood. The victim had been living in that building for more than seven decades, a fact that triggered the immediate rejection of various neighborhood and human rights organizations.
The activists reiterated that they will remain focused on public space to coordinate new street actions and citizen meetings. They demand the immediate cessation of judicial launches against vulnerable families and the implementation of effective policies that guarantee the fundamental right to decent housing.
