The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, described the kidnapping of Venezuelan migrants by the governments of El Salvador and the United States as a crime against humanity.
Saab explained that the treatment of kidnapped Venezuelans violates the Rome Statute, in addition to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; therefore, it constitutes a crime against humanity, in addition to being a situation that “has no precedent in international law.”
The person responsible for the criminal action indicated that the detention of Venezuelans in El Salvador represents a forced disappearance and that none of the detainees have a criminal record or have committed any crime.
“We have seen, based on unofficial lists that have circulated, that none are on the list of arrest warrants or red alert to INTERPOL (...) none are even requested for a minor offense.”
He specified that the State authorities have carried out all the corresponding procedures before the Salvadoran justice system for the rescue of kidnapped Venezuelans, including the application of habeas corpus. However, he assured that so far no response has been received.
In that sense, he demanded that the Supreme Court of Justice of El Salvador rule on the requested appeal, “on the basis that they cannot hide because it is already a notorious and communicational public that it was introduced; they cannot say that it does not exist.”
Saab reiterated the State's commitment to the defense of these compatriots, “they have their defense, they have mourners, the Venezuelan State is protecting their rights.”
