This Tuesday, April 1st, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, held a meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who is in Russia on an official visit until April 2nd.
First of all, the Russian president asked Wang to “send a friendly greeting” to the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, and invited him to participate in the celebrations of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War, which will be held in May in Moscow, the Russia Today website reported.
“We will celebrate together this anniversary and the victory over Nazi Germany and militarist Japan,” he said.
Putin expressed his “satisfaction” with the way in which relations between Moscow and Beijing are developing, even with the direct support of the Foreign Ministries of both countries.
He indicated that the main objective of this visit by the Chinese delegation is to prepare for the future visit of the president of the Asian giant to Russia. “We will prepare a rich program, which will be related not only to participation in solemn events (...) but we will have the opportunity to talk about the current state of bilateral relations, to discuss our interaction on international platforms, first of all, at the UN, the Security Council, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and on a number of other platforms on which we are working together and successfully,” he said.
Putin stressed that “the President of the People's Republic of China will be the main guest.”
For his part, the head of Chinese diplomacy conveyed to Putin “the most cordial greetings from his old friend, President Xi Jinping”.
Wang emphasized that “cooperation between China and Russia is not directed against third countries, nor does it succumb to outside interference,” adding that the friendship between Moscow and Beijing “is not opportunistic, but long-term.”
“You have correctly pointed out that the main task of my current trip is to prepare for President Xi Jinping's visit and his participation in the celebrations that will take place in early May. Before my meeting with you today, Russian Foreign Minister (Sergey) Lavrov and I have already thoroughly checked the state of preparations for this visit,” he said.
He noted that “on the whole, it can be said that the preparations are going quite well”.
Previously, the head of Chinese diplomacy held a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. “Russia and China are united not only by historical and military brotherhood and a long common border, but also by centuries-old traditions of good neighbourliness and wide coincidence of national interests [...]. This is exactly how our leaders guide us,” said the Russian Foreign Minister.
“We see the responsibility of Moscow and Beijing in close coordination on the international stage. In this, the world's majority countries see, perhaps, the most significant stabilizing factor at this difficult time in the development of world politics,” he said.
In turn, the Foreign Minister of the Asian giant stressed that he is convinced that, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, “the global strategic interaction between China and Russia in the new era will demonstrate a new vitality and will reach new heights”.
“The two leaders oriented Sino-Russian relations to move forward with confidence in the midst of major changes unprecedented in a century and set important new tasks to further deepen the comprehensive strategic interaction between the two countries,” he said.
