The president of the Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, during his speech at the end of the year, announced the organized withdrawal of French troops from the country. This movement will begin early this year, following the example of other nations in the region.
The president reported that the military camp, occupied by French troops from the 43rd Marine Infantry Battalion (BIMA) in Port-Bouët, near Abidjan, will be returned to the Ivorian Armed Forces.
“We can be satisfied with our Army, where modernization is now effective,” said the Ivorian president.
The camp will be renamed General Thomas D'Aquin Ouattara, in honor of the first Chief of Staff of the Ivorian Armed Forces, an exceptional career soldier, as highlighted by the African president.
The Ouattara government joins the list of African nations in ending foreign military presence in the region, after Senegal, Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.
