This Monday, December 9th, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, leads the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Battle of Ayacucho: A Tribute to Freedom and Independence.
“Today is a very special day for all the Peoples of our America, because on a day like today, under this hot sun, in a single South American camp, the troops led by Grand Marshal Antonio José de Sucre masterfully defeated what was then the most powerful army on planet Earth: the Spanish Army,” he said.
This was expressed in the civic-military event on the occasion of the Unveiling of the Monument Commemorative of the Bicentennial of the Battle of Ayacucho, held on Paseo Los Próceres, a monument in the immediate vicinity of Fort Tiuna, where he stressed that “with that great triumph they sealed the victory of the liberation of our continent, of three centuries of ruthless and criminal colonialism.
“We are the people of the winners of Ayacucho,” he emphasized.
The head of state stated that “this commits us, the 5 Generations of the Historical Bloc of 21st Century Venezuela, and the civic-military and police fusion, to have the same intensity so that our country is economically independent, with its own political model, of direct, community and neighborhood democracy.”
“May this pride in building and supporting our diverse cultural identity remain,” he said.
The Battle of Ayacucho, fought on December 9, 1824, is considered one of the final confrontations of the Spanish-American wars of independence.
The celebration of the Bicentennial not only recalls an important chapter in history, but it also renews the commitment of Venezuelans to the principles of freedom and independence.
