The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed his support for Caribbean countries that issued a lawsuit to the London government to recognize and pay historic reparations for the slavery experienced by the English Empire.

In the Digital Zone segment of the special program “With Maduro+” dedicated to youth, from the headquarters of the “Great Young Venezuela Mission”, he stated that “London recognizes and pays for the historic reparations to which the people who inherit slaves brought by force, through torture and kidnapping”.

He also announced that Venezuela, together with other nations, wants to make a profound claim to Spain for the theft and looting of Latin American lands and the holocaust against their ancestors.

Venezuela wants, together with a group of Latin American countries, to make a profound demand for Spain to pay reparations for the theft, looting and enslavement suffered by our indigenous and African grandparents,” he emphasized.

He argued that the People seek justice and recognition “for the horrors of the past and represent a joint effort by Caribbean nations to obtain reparations for historic crimes committed during slavery.”

During this week, a total of 15 Caribbean governments have agreed to ask the United Kingdom to pay billions of pounds as compensation for the slave trade.

A report by the University of the West Indies, released after a symposium of the American Society of International Law, concludes that the United Kingdom must pay 24 trillion dollars (18.8 trillion pounds sterling) in reparations for transatlantic slavery in 14 countries.

Of this amount, about 9.6 trillion dollars belong to Jamaica, according to the National Commission for African American Reparations.
