15 years after the eradication of trawling, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, joyfully celebrated the Day of the Artisanal Fisherman and Aquaculturist, with the firm intention of exalting the vital role of men and women of the sea, who are fundamental in guaranteeing the right to food.
“In 2001, Commander Hugo Chávez enacted the Fisheries and Aquaculture Law as an act of vindication and recognition of fishermen who fight against the industrial trawling system and against the devastation of the country's marine spaces and then in 2010, the Eternal Commander of the Bolivarian Revolution, decreed March 14 as the Day of the Artisanal Fisherman and the Fisherman, and in 2016, the creation of Ministry of People's Power for Fisheries and Aquaculture, with the purpose of strengthening this sector so important for national production,” said the head of state.
He also highlighted that today the defense of the Venezuelan economy and the promotion of the Agrifood, Fisheries and Aquaculture Engine, the second important point of the Bolivarian Economic Agenda, are continuing to promote, strengthen and promote national economic development in various key sectors, through a diversified and self-sustainable model.
