The Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations (ECLAC) reported that the poverty rate in the region fell by 1.5 percentage points in 2023 and reached 27.3%, the lowest figure since records exist.
The report, entitled "Social Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2024: challenges of non-contributory social protection to move towards inclusive social development “, details that the extreme poverty rate reached 10.6% of the population in the Latin American and Caribbean region in 2023, representing a contraction of 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous year.
In presenting the report, the agency indicated that “the percentage of the Latin American population living in poverty in 2023 was 27.3%, a figure that represents a decrease of 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year and of more than 5 percentage points compared to that recorded in 2020, the most critical year of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is also the lowest figure since comparable records have been available.”
The fall in poverty in Brazil was one of the main factors that explained the decline in the region, which influenced the average figure by 80%. ECLAC said that, if poverty had not fallen in this country, the regional average would have been 28.4%.
