Pope Francis, who was hospitalized for several weeks due to severe pneumonia, announced his return to public life for next Easter Sunday, April 20, reviewed the website Page 12.
The Vatican confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff, still in the process of recovery, will give the traditional urbi et orbi blessing, an act that only he can perform, from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. However, their participation in other Holy Week celebrations remains uncertain.
The Holy See mentioned that the Pope's participation in the festivities will depend on their evolution in the coming weeks. If I can't be present at some ceremonies, I could delegate the presidency of the Masses to other cardinals, something that has happened on previous occasions.
After five weeks of hospitalization in Rome, Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday, March 23, where he continued his convalescence.
Although he is already in his usual residence, Santa Marta, the Pope is still receiving treatment for motor and respiratory rehabilitation, which will require at least two more months of rest.
During his departure from the hospital, he was visibly exhausted, with a trembling voice, which aroused the concern of the faithful and the church community. The frailty of his health raised doubts about whether he would be able to preside over the most important celebrations on the liturgical calendar.
The hospitalization of Francisco, who was on the verge of death on at least two occasions according to his doctors, marked a turning point in his pontificate.
During this time, the Pope, who has been characterized by his closeness to the people and his tireless pastoral work, was forced to slow down his pace, something that has not been easy for him.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, revealed that Francis is resting in his residence, without receiving visitors or audiences. In his opinion, the Pope will probably not be able to resume his activities with the same intensity as before.
“We must find different means,” Parolin said, suggesting that the pontiff will seek new ways to carry out his mission.
