The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) this Wednesday, in the context of the 9th Summit of Heads of State of the regional organization, which is being held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The New Granada president, who arrived at the event with a call for regional unity to face the economic challenges imposed by the United States (US) tariffs, succeeds his Honduran counterpart, Xiomara Castro.
“First, to act as a block; second, to open ourselves to the world,” said Petro, stressing that these alliances are essential to counteract the effects of the trade war and strengthen Latin America's position on the global stage.
In addition, he stressed the need for a coordinated response, announcing strategic meetings between CELAC and other international blocs, such as the European Union in November, China in May, and future meetings with Africa and the countries of the Persian Gulf.
