On February 17, 1621, Captain Pedro Gutiérrez de Lugo and Father Gabriel de Mendoza founded the town of Dulce Nombre de Jesús de Petare, located on a hill bordered by the Caurimare and Guaire rivers.

For many years, this town was inhabited by Los Mariches, a group of indigenous people who remained part of the Caribe language family, until 1573. From this date on, the colonizers built the first buildings, the market and houses for the most notable families.

According to the use of the time, the colonizers, mostly Canarians, built the town following the quadricular shape of the central square, around which they located the church, the first public buildings, the market and the homes of the most notable families of the time.

Maize, cacao, coffee and sugar cane farms proliferated in the valley, and these crops supplied food to the inhabitants of the Dulce Nombre de Jesús and the inhabitants of Caracas.
