President Keiko Fujimori acknowledged that her Executive cannot carry out greater preventive work in the Piura River in the face of the threat of the El Niño phenomenon, stating that “more than that we cannot do”. His statements sparked severe questioning for evading state responsibilities and delegating blame to past efforts.
According to information provided by Telesur, despite having arranged for the installation of shelters for 30,000 people, the president urged people in vulnerable areas to evacuate their homes immediately because of the risk that the natural phenomenon would exceed government forecasts.
Unions and citizen sectors pointed out the lack of comprehensive responses and the marked dependence on contributions from the private sector to carry out cleaning works. The criticisms point directly to the insufficient protection infrastructure and to the historical lack of protection of families that live on the banks of rivers.
The statement has opened an intense debate in the political sphere about the effectiveness of mitigation measures in the north of the country, while local authorities evaluate the expansion of security fences in the face of weather alerts.
