On January 6, 1943, Oscar López Rivera was born in the city of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, a man who stands out for his fight for the dignity of peoples and the end of the colonialism of the United States over the territory of the island of Borinquén.
Known for his humanist character and his courage to face threats from the security forces of US imperialism, together with Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, who was assassinated by the FBI, López Rivera, was one of the most vigorous fighters for freedom in Puerto Rico, which earned him a sentence of 55 years in 1981 and another of 15 years in 1991 for attempted escape.
After serving 35 years of sentence, which made him the longest-serving political prisoner in prison in the world, this indomitable rebel was released at 74 years of age, which did not prevent him from resuming his activism for the definitive independence of Puerto Rico.
López Rivera expressed his support for the Bolivarian Revolution and was grateful for the support that Venezuela has given to the cause of Puerto Rico's Independence, which, as President Maduro has said, “will be free sooner rather than later.”
“Life is a constant struggle. If we want to live we have to fight. We can achieve a better and fairer world if we dare to fight it”, Oscar López Rivera.
