History repeats itself, once again. The promises of the Venezuelan opposition to its followers are fading like sand in their hands. Edmundo González Urrutia, former presidential candidate for the July 28 election against the candidate of the Revolution, Nicolás Maduro, fled the country leaving his supporters adrift.

The story of broken promises, non-existent support and absence returns. Treason, a fundamental characteristic of the country's extremist right, is revealed.

On the night of this Saturday, September 7, the opposition member Edmundo González Urrutia left the country after being a refugee in the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas for several days. The country's executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, made the announcement: “(...) she applied to that government for the processing of political asylum. In this regard, once the relevant contacts between the two governments have taken place, the extremes of the case have been met and in accordance with international legality, Venezuela has granted appropriate safeguards for the sake of tranquility and political peace in the country. This conduct reaffirms the respect for law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community. In the next few hours, we will continue to report.”

The premise of “Until the End” as well as the repeated mantra of years ago of “cessation of usurpation, transitional government and free elections” foreshadowed its failure. Fleeing was the winning option, as they were cornered by justice and a people determined to live in peace and in repudiation of their violent actions.

After three subpoenas from the Public Prosecutor's Office that he did not attend, last Monday, September 2, the entity requested an arrest warrant against González Urrutia, who faces six charges, including the publication and maintenance of the resultadosconvzla.com website, usurpation of functions, forging a public document, inciting disobedience to the laws, computer crimes, criminal association and conspiracy. Feeling cornered, González Urrutia's legal representative, lawyer José Vicente Haro, held a meeting with the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, and stated that the former candidate was not related to the website in question, which is the subject of a criminal investigation, for announcing the publication of the alleged voting records that gave him the victory on 28J and that in reality they are 9 thousand of these forges that were placed there in a fraudulent manner, with numerous irregularities and inconsistencies reported at the time.

The opponent pleaded not guilty.

After being discovered, lost and knowing the responsibility that comes with lying to justice and trying to evade it, calling for violence and causing damage to the country, loss of human life and related crimes, Edmundo González Urrutia preferred to flee and abandon those who believed in him. In the best style of Juan Guaidó, Leopoldo López, Julio Borges, Antonio Ledezma and Carlos Vecchio, he left hatred and violence in his wake and thought only of him without taking responsibility for the violence he generated.

He is another one who leaves the country betraying his followers, whom he will now call himself “politically persecuted” and calling them to demonstrate for him, but seeing him from “afar” and with their pockets full. Now he will say that he “fights from exile” enjoying the good life with the money he obtained from the empire and defrauding Venezuelans.

The unusual thing is not that history repeats itself, but that there are still those who continue to believe in them.
