The Ombudsman, Eglée González Lobato, and the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Barham Salih,
held a meeting to evaluate new lines of cooperation aimed at
strengthening the protection of repatriated citizens, as well as of people
affected by the earthquakes of last June 24.
During the meeting, González Lobato highlighted the willingness
expressed by the high commissioner to deepen joint work and pointed out
that people must have a nearby institution that attends to them and
acts in defense of their rights.
The defender explained the experience developed by the
institution through defense brigades, designed to reinforce the territorial
presence of the Ombudsman's Office and its capacity to identify situations of lack of protection
early on, especially during emergencies and in communities in conditions of greater vulnerability.
González Lobato pointed out that cooperation with UNHCR
represents an opportunity to strengthen the specialized training of the
Ombudsman's Office, in addition to the institutional capacities
necessary to offer differentiated responses according to the
circumstances of each person.
“The experience of UNHCR and the territorial deployment of
our brigades can help us to build increasingly
precise, close and sensitive responses to different situations of
vulnerability,” he said.
For his part, Salih highlighted the Office of the Ombudsman as
an institution allied with UNHCR and reaffirmed its willingness to strengthen cooperation
mechanisms to help all people,
regardless of origin, social status or religion, fully exercise
their rights and participate in their communities.
