November 21, 1958, the same year that General Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown, University Student Day was declared, according to Official Gazette number 25,818, in order to highlight the role of these young people in the history of the country.
The origin of this commemoration can be found in the events of 1957, when a group of students from different universities in the country, unhappy with persecution, torture and exclusion, declared themselves against the Pérez Jiménez dictatorship. This caused the closure of university education centers and the incarceration of numbers of students nationwide.
This date is an opportunity to pay tribute to those university students, who sought to claim their educational rights, improve living conditions and establish a more just society. As well as to highlight the historical legacy of the university student, who continues to be present in the new generations, these being an example of conviction and courage.
