The Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology 2024 was awarded to American scientists Víctor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, for the discovery of micro-RNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

“The 2024 Nobel Prize honors two scientists for their discovery of a fundamental principle that governs the regulation of gene activity,” the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm reported on Monday.

Scientists became interested in how different cell types develop and discovered micro-RNAs, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in determining how organisms develop and work (and how they sometimes malfunction), that is, how genetic regulation is carried out, international media reports.

With this discovery, researchers now know that the human genome provides instructions for more than 1000 forms of micro-RNA, which are important for the development and functioning of organisms.
