No preliminary damage report! Magnitude 5 earthquake shook northern Chile

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy indicated, in turn, that the earthquake does not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami off the Chilean coast.

An earthquake of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale occurred this Thursday in the Antofagasta region, in the northern part of Chile and in the middle of the Atacama desert, with no fatalities or material damage reported so far, local authorities said.

 

The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile reported that the earthquake occurred at 15:58 local time (18:58 GMT), 74 kilometers southwest of the desert commune of Ollagüe, about 1,730 kilometers north of the Chilean capital.

 

According to the report, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 129 kilometers.

 

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy indicated that the earthquake does not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami off the Chilean coast.

 

For its part, the National Disaster Prevention and Response System continues to evaluate possible damage to people, basic infrastructure and services.
