This Sunday, through a statement, the governments of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“After 49 years, the courageous peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger observe with regret and great disappointment that the organization (ECOWAS) has strayed from the ideals of its founding fathers and the pan-Africanist spirit,” says the document read by Colonel Amadou Abdramane, spokesman for the Nigerian junta.

In this regard, they denounced that ECOWAS is “under the influence of foreign powers”, so “it has become a threat to its member States”.

In addition, they stated that this body has failed “to help these states in their existential fight against terrorism and insecurity.”
