This Friday, the 119th Congress begins in the United States (USA), which will be dominated by Republicans after the November elections. The Senate will have 12 new members and the House of Representatives will have more than 60 legislators.
The inauguration of the new congressmen will mark the end of the transition in the Capitol, giving way to important decisions, highlighted the Fuser News portal.
Among them, the approval of the federal budget in March, an issue that already generated tensions in the previous legislature with the opposition of President-elect Donald Trump and his ally Elon Musk, who negotiated a bipartisan agreement.
The election of the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is a key event today. While he has Trump's public support, Republican congressman Thomas Massie announced that he would not vote for him, blaming Johnson for having “partnered with Democrats to send money to Ukraine.”
Republicans hope to make rapid progress on legislation to promote core components of Trump's agenda, such as migration, energy and taxes.
For his part, Johnson, who won the vote of conservatives Keith Self of Texas and Ralph Norman of South Carolina, won another term after he won a couple of Republican parties that initially voted to deprive him of the necessary support in the first vote.
