Nelson Mandela: Banner of the fight for civil rights in South Africa and the world (+sow)

On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandela, a former president known and remembered for campaigning against discrimination, exclusion and exploitation of Afro-descendants in his country, died at the age of 95.

Mandela changed the history of his country and the world because of his tireless struggle to end the racist apartheid regime, despite having been imprisoned for 27 years.

In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the first Afro-descendant president of his South Africa from 1994 to 1999, as well as the first president to be elected by universal suffrage.

After assuming the presidency, the also known as Madiba gave up a third of his salary and created the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

It is in his honor, every July 18, that Nelson Mandela International Day is commemorated, in November 2009, by the General Assembly of the United Nations in recognition of his contribution to freedom and peace.
