The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced the signing of a multi-million dollar contract to purchase 155 mm artillery ammunition, aimed at “protecting allies”, in addition to encouraging the prolongation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the head of the military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, the agreement is 1.2 billion dollars for the purchase of 220,000 155-millimeter ammunition cartridges, the most requested artillery projectiles. “This will allow NATO to protect its allies, as well as continue to help Ukraine,” he was quoted as saying by RT on his website.

For her part, the director general of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, Stacy Cummings, indicated that the projectiles will be available to allies within 24 to 36 months.

This coincides with the recent announcement by the European Union (EU) of its plans to increase ammunition production. In this regard, the European Commissioner for the European Internal Market, Thierry Breton, assured that Europe will have the capacity to produce more than one million units of ammunition by the end of this year.

Breton said that the priority is to ensure that most of these munitions are destined for Ukraine, in one of his many actions to prevent peace between Moscow and Kiev.
