Recently, the national government announced the launch of the First National High School Poetry Contest “Reynaldo Pérez Só”, an event organized by the “Juan Calzadilla” National School of Poetry, founded in October 2022 at the Liceo Andrés Bello in Caracas, to build meeting spaces that train and promote new literary authors.

This event, which seeks to motivate new readers through a promotional space, where new and new literary creators will be made visible, will be able to participate young students from the secondary education system (1st to 6th year) who are part of public and private high schools, as well as the school's workshop system and those who write independently.

For the poet Ana María Oviedo Palomares, who was honored in the 16th edition of the 2022 World Poetry Festival, the call for the National High School Poetry Contest “Reynaldo Pérez Só” has as its main purpose to promote among the youngest, in this case middle school students from all over the country, the writing of poetry, the awareness of the profession, the discovery of their abilities and their literary vocation.

Through the execution of this activity, it will be possible to know “what our boys are writing, their readings, their training needs in the field. And mobilize, mobilize sensitivities,” said Oviedo. He also mentioned that with the dissemination of this poetic contest, it is possible to encourage young people to discover and reinforce their interest in poetry and writing.

As stated by the poet, since January 19, when the rules of the contest were published, those in charge of the event have received works from young participants, until April 15 of this year, when students will have the opportunity to apply.

The contest pays tribute to the Venezuelan poet, translator, doctor and co-founder of the magazine Poesia, Reynaldo Pérez Só, who left this earthly plane on July 30, 2023 at 77 years of age and who during his life was an enthusiast of experimental writing projects, mainly accompanying young people in their confrontation with language.
