During the plenary session this Thursday, the National Assembly authorized the appointment of political scientist Alexander Yánez as Venezuelan ambassador to Guyana.
Yánez has an outstanding diplomatic career, in which he has served as ambassador to Peru and Bolivia, vice-minister for Latin America and the Caribbean and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, among other positions.
Deputy Gilberto Giménez, who presented the report, described the diplomat as “profoundly patriotic and committed to the Bolivarian cause,” stressing that he will assume his functions in a country that is “highly sensitive, of great geostrategic and historical importance for Venezuela,” the Latest News portal reported.
He also noted that bilateral relations between the two nations have been “marked by a territorial dispute.”
He stressed that it is estimated that the International Court of Justice will issue a verdict on this matter between the months of January and February 2027. “We also know that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela does not know the jurisdiction of that international body, but we cannot forget that this decision will, in some way, mark the bilateral relations of the two countries,” he stressed.
He also indicated that the new ambassador presented “a very successful work plan at three structural levels”.
Yánez argued that bilateral ties must transcend territorial conflict through the search for spaces for cooperation in the economic, commercial, cultural and even energy spheres, “as long as energy resources are not exploited in areas subject to controversy.”
He went on to specify that, “at the current juncture, and considering that after the decision of the International Court of Justice tensions could arise, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will assume Bolivarian peace diplomacy.”
He added that the prospective approach will consist of “managing the different scenarios that may arise in the framework of this dispute”.
