From January to August of this year, 440,000 surgeries have been performed in different public hospitals in the country, reported Isabel Iturria, the sector's vice-president for Science, Technology, Ecosocialism and Health.

“More than 440 thousand surgeries have been performed between January and August (...) that's around 55 thousand monthly surgeries, which is a truly important number, much higher than that done in the private sector and a number that tells us that a large response is being given,” Iturria said in statements replicated by the Venezuelan News Agency (AVN).

He stated that although there are some weaknesses in the Public Health System, there are more important strengths that this sector has developed in recent times.

He also stressed that all these treatments, both surgical and hospital, have been possible despite the difficulties that the country has experienced as a result of unilateral sanctions and financial blockades. However, he said that progress has been made in acquiring equipment and improving hospital services.

The Deputy Minister recalled that one of the great achievements achieved in the revolution was the Children's Cardiologist.

“There is a before and after in children's cardiovascular health. Since Commander Hugo Chávez arrived, an attempt was made to respond to this forgotten sector (...) since the creation of the Children's Cardiologist, more than 15,000 children and young people with congenital heart disease have been operated on 20 years ago,” he said.
