The Nepalese authorities raised this Monday to more than 200 homes affected by the flood that occurred on Sunday in several localities in the center of the country.

According to the Nepalese army, 95 people were rescued, including nine foreigners, while five citizens remain missing.

The Disaster Risk Management and Reduction Authority (NDRRMA) also reported the destruction of five bridges and at least 674 people affected. Scientific research points to the rupture of a natural dam formed by a landslide of ice, rocks and earth in the Himalayas as a possible source of the disaster.

An analysis by the Nepal Hydrology and Water Resources Research Center, based on satellite images taken between October 6 and 11, revealed a dark strip showing an avalanche of more than 3,500 meters of unevenness, accumulated near Chumchet, which would have triggered the flood around 4:00 local time.

Alerts and community communication

Authorities issued preventive alerts for communities located along the Budhi Gandaki, Trishuli and Narayani rivers, due to water level fluctuations and the risk of new flooding. However, local media such as The Kathmandu Post reported that neighbors were able to get to safety thanks to an informal communication network through phone calls and messages on Facebook, before official alerts arrived.

This new event occurs while Nepal is still recovering from the August catastrophe, which left thousands of victims and more than one hundred thousand missing. The CEO of ICIMOD, Pema Gyamtsho, warned that this is a reminder of the high exposure of mountain communities to sudden and chain hazards.

According to a study published in Scientific Reports, some 300,000 people live in waterways susceptible to flooding, while construction in these areas increased by almost 50% between 2016 and 2023.
