Minister Villegas: 2023 was the year of the reaffirmation of Venezuelan culture

This Wednesday, January 3rd, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, highlighted that the year 2023 was marked by “the reaffirmation of the vitality of Venezuelan culture”, highlighting each of the activities carried out by the sectors that represent the arts in the country.
In this regard, during his interview with Café in the morning, he highlighted the success of what was the International Theater Festival, the International Book Fair of Venezuela, the National Craft Fair, as well as the different activities that were organized to commemorate historic dates such as the Bicentennial of the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo.
He also highlighted that other achievements with which 2023 ended were the nomination of the Venezuelan Joropo before the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the naming of the Bands and Parrandas of the Holy Innocents of Caucagua as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
He recalled that the cultural sector, as well as others in the country, were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; however, he indicated that his portfolio supported various projects to continue bringing art and culture to the People.
At the same time, he indicated that the issue of the blockade and sanctions has also had an impact on the cultural sector, “but beyond that, there were a group of men and women who overcame these obstacles (...) and with vitality they have continued to cling to their cultural dynamics in the different branches of art.”
“I feel happy and proud to have overcome these obstacles together with an immense legion of artists, cultivators and creators, and above all with a group of young people who are doing culture,” he said and said that there are still many things to do and correct.
