The Minister for Productive Agriculture and Lands, Vladímir Padrino López, asserted that domestic sugar production supplies 55% of the country's demand.
“In the 2025-2026 cycle, the industry closed with more than 4.6 million tons processed, covering 55% of national demand with home-made production, consolidating domestic supply through national agricultural efforts,” he said.
This statement was made during a working meeting with representatives of the agro-industrial sector to evaluate the progress and productive capacity of the sugar industry in the country.
During the meeting, Padrino López described the sector as key because of its impact on the economy and rural employment.
He also highlighted that the milling of sugar cane has registered an increase of 96% since 2020.
In this regard, Padrino López also highlighted that in terms of the import of this item, there was a decrease of 20% compared to the previous year.
In addition, he announced that the country is preparing to start the next harvest later this month, with the goal of raising yields in the field and continuing to reduce dependence on the foreign market.
Padrino López emphasized the importance of addressing the structural challenges that still persist in the sector to consolidate the advance of food sovereignty and strengthen the country's productive capacity.
