The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Yván Gil highlighted the trajectory and strategic impact of the national operating system Canaima GNU/Linux, since its launch in 2007, a pioneering project in the promotion of free software within the Venezuelan public administration and education system.
“The first version of Canaima GNU/Linux was released in 2007 by the National Center for Information Technology (CNTI). Based on Debian, it incorporated GNOME and free applications adapted to Spanish and the Venezuelan educational context. The project was essential to promote technological sovereignty and the priority use of free software in public administration,” said the Minister.
He also recalled that over time, Canaima diversified into initiatives such as Canaima Colibrí, for low-resource teams, and Canaima Educativo, linked since 2009 to the delivery of laptops to elementary school students.
“From the Ministry of Popular Power for Science, Technology and Innovation, we vindicate this project for its contribution to reducing dependence on proprietary systems, expanding access to computer tools in schools and public offices and the nation's technological sovereignty,” said Gil.
