This Wednesday, September 30, the president of the Presidential Commission for the Evaluation of Infrastructure Habitability, Francisco Garcés, emphasized that all structures affected by earthquakes must be repaired under clear and technical guidelines.
In this regard, during an interview with Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), he specified that the presidential commission prepared four technical procedure manuals: The first manual covers the shoring of structures and the second one details the treatment of cracks in masonry and explains the repair of these damages.
He also indicated that “not all the cracked masonry structure needs to be knocked down; depending on the thickness of the crack, it has a repair procedure”.
Referring to the third manual, he pointed out that it specifies how to repair reinforced concrete elements such as columns, beams and walls with minor and moderate damage, and the fourth text sets out guidelines for correcting severe damage to reinforced concrete structures and restoring the operability of construction components.
“This has to be taken up by all the engineers who are going to do the repair project (...) it could be a repair project being carried out by Venezuela Renace, the Ministry of Housing, the presidential commission, as well as mayors and governorates or private entities,” he said.
Garcés also said that the most intensive inspection and approach work is concentrated in Greater Caracas, La Guaira and several municipalities in the state of Miranda, such as Chacao, Sucre, Plaza and Guatire.
He explained that phases 2 and 3 of the care plan are being implemented in affected structures in states such as Aragua, Carabobo and Yaracuy.
He stressed that in the interior regions of the country, the damage mainly corresponds to single-family homes.
