The Argentine Republic has registered an increase in the numbers of poverty and indigence, which cover more than half of the population.
According to a report published by Telesur, this increase is expressed in cities with images of people living on the streets. With 52.9 percent poverty, the picture indicates that more and more people will be in this situation, without laws to allocate budgets to these cases.
Adriana Piedrabuena, from the association "Project 7", comments that she sees the future of this situation very badly: “This is going to grow exponentially, people are going to be left on the streets”. In addition, it states that there is law 27654, a national law, which has not yet entered into force, has no budget, so there is no public policy.
Approximately 300 people are staying in the four shelter centers of the aforementioned association, in addition to outsiders who come to eat and there will be about 100 more, according to Piedrabuena's testimony. “This is growing with the crisis. Nowadays our centers are at their maximum capacity and we are receiving requests for vacancies all the time.”
In figures provided at the end of September by the Cifra Center, there are 24.8 million people living in poverty nationwide, an increase of more than five million compared to the previous semester. Just as there are 6.8 million in a situation of destitution, which represents an increase of 2.8 million compared to the previous semester.
The official source INDEC reported that in the first half of 2024, 52.9% of people were below the poverty line and 18.1% below the destitution line. The new poverty figure marks an increase of 12.8 percentage points compared to data for the same period in 2023 (40.1%).
