The Senate of Mexico approved this Tuesday, with a qualified majority of 86 votes in favor, the constitutional reform that establishes that candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, state governorates and the Head of Government of the Republic must possess only their nationality and formally renounce any other nationality.

The initiative, which modifies articles 82, 116 and 122 of the Magna Carta, had the full support of the Morena caucus and allied parties, achieving the required vote after summoning legislative alternates to complete the list of 128 senators present in the plenary session. After the regulatory debate, the president of the Upper House, Higinio Martínez Miranda, sent the corresponding minutes to the state congresses for constitutional ratification.

For their part, all the opposition blocs cast their votes against the bill, a position joined by the senator of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), Luis Armando Melgar. Adverse parliamentary organizations argued that the amendment establishes unjustified restrictions on the political rights of the migrant and multi-nationality population.

With this approval in the Congress of the Union, the amendment now requires the approval of the majority of local legislatures for subsequent enactment in the Official Gazette of the Federation, marking a new framework of institutional requirements for the exercise of senior positions in the Mexican Executive Power.
