In Mexico, December 12 has a very important connotation, since the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe or “Little Brunette of Tepeyac” is celebrated , on this date millions of faithful come to visit her and offer her a night to sing the so-called “Mañanitas” to her.

Its origin dates back to December 12, 1531, when the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego for the fourth time on the Tepeyac hill, currently a representative place for Catholics.

According to tradition, Juan Diego was looking for his uncle, who was sick, and the Virgin appeared next to the “Pocito” and told him that his family member was healthy. After the apparition, the man climbed the roof of Tepeyac, to which he had asked him to go to “La Guadalupana” to pick some roses that did not bloom in that place and that time. The roses were brought before the bishop, and when they were to be delivered, the robe worn by Juan Diego revealed the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is worshiped in Mexico with great devotion. It is believed that pilgrimages began with the appearance of the image on Juan Diego's mantle; however, historical records place the first celebration of the Virgin around 1667; on December 12 of that year, the Day in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe was established in Mexico through a papal bull of Clement IX.

In 1824, the National Congress declared this day a National Holiday.
