On Tuesday, the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved the reforms to the Constitution relating to national sovereignty proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, in response to the pretensions of the President of the United States (USA) Donald Trump, to fight against cartels as terrorist entities.
The reform includes changes to articles 19 and 40 of the Constitution, as suggested by President Sheinbaum on March 4 of the current year.
In accordance with article 19, the crime of terrorism is added to the list of crimes requiring preventive judicial detention. It also extends this punishment to citizens or foreigners involved in the production, distribution, sale, transfer or illegal entry of weapons into the national territory or who are involved in actions that violate sovereignty.
Legislators spent almost three hours debating the reservations of the minutes; however, it was not changed despite the fact that the National Action Party (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and some legislators from the Citizens' Movement (MC) voted against it.
The vote in favor in this case was 327 and 116 against, while the draft decree was already sent to state congresses.
