Martín Tovar y Tovar: The Painter of Independence (+Christmas)

On February 10, 1827, Martín Tovar y Tovar, a prominent painter who captured part of the historical events of our Independence, was born in the city of Caracas.

He received his first lessons from Celestino Martínez, then studied Drawing Academy with Antonio José Carranza and at the Colegio de La Paz with Carmelo Fernández.

In 1873, Tovar y Tovar was commissioned by Guzmán Blanco to create a gallery of portraits of the main heroes of Independence and other personalities of republican life for the Elliptical Hall of the Federal Legislative Palace.

One of his most famous works is the painting The Signing of the Act of Independence.

In 1885 he left for France to execute the new commissioned works, The Battle of Carabobo (1887), The Battle of Boyacá (1895), The Battle of Junín (1895) and The Car Treaty.

Tovar y Tovar spent the last two decades of his life interested in the landscape genre, serving as a link between the landscape design of traveling artists and the work of the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

On December 17, 1902, he died at 75 years of age, his legacy has inspired many artists today.
