This Wednesday, October 7, Spanish media report the death in Madrid at 87 of Mari Carmen Abascal, an icon of the fight for decent housing in Spain to oppose arbitrary evictions against tenants and landlords.

Her death comes a few weeks after being evicted from the apartment in the Retiro neighborhood where she lived for seven decades, an eviction driven by a real estate fund that seriously deteriorated her health, despite being up to date with her payments.

Abascal died this Wednesday after being admitted to the hospital for a fortnight, as reported by the Tenants Union in a statement.

The old woman had been living in the building under rent for 71 years. His case caused a notable social impact and intensified mobilizations promoted by groups in favor of the right to housing. These protests culminated in the installation of a camp in Puerta del Sol and influenced the subsequent approval of two decrees by the Executive, which, however, ended up being repealed by the Congress of Deputies.

Maricarmen will be remembered for her steadfastness and her phrase “Fight, defend what is yours”.
