On October 30, 1960, the most important soccer player in South American history was born in Lanús, Argentina: Diego Armando Maradona. Because of his character, talent and dedication to the ball on foot, he has become one of the most controversial personalities in the most played sport in the world.

Maradona was born into a family with few resources. With a lot of effort and unrestrained passion, he managed to build one of the most famous careers in professional football in the world.

He played 692 games: 241 in Argentina, 87 in Spain, 259 in Naples, and 105 with the Argentine national team. He scored 353 goals and won 10 titles: Youth World Cup in 1979; Boca Juniors in 1981; Copa del Rey in 1983; World Cup in Mexico in 1986; Napoli in 1987 and 1990; Copa Italia in 1987; UEFA Cup in 1989; Supercopa Italiana in 1991; and the Artemio Franchi Cup in 1993.

He was recognized by teammates, coaches and fans as the best soccer player of all time. He has also been classified as the best player in the history of the world championships and was chosen as the Best Player of the Century with 53.6% of the votes in an official vote taken on the website of the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) in 1991, also obtaining third place in a survey carried out by the members of the Football Commission of that institution and the subscribers of FIFA Magazine.

On October 25, 1997, the Argentinian played his last game with a victory (2-1) for Boca Juniors over River Plate, at Monumental in Buenos Aires. On October 30, on his 37th birthday, he left the soccer fields for good as an active player.

Diego Armando was one of the defenders of the Bolivarian Revolution because of his anti-imperialist character, openly showing his admiration for Commander Chávez and maintained a brotherly friendship with President Nicolás Maduro.
