On November 23, 1856, in the town of Paita, Peru, Manuela Saenz, Simón Bolívar's romantic partner, died, recognized as a hero of the Independence of South America; also called Liberator of the Liberator by Bolívar himself, when on September 25, 1828, she was the subject of an assassination attempt, where Manuelita's courageous intervention frustrated the fact and saved the life.

This liberator was born in Quito, Ecuador on December 27, 1797. He stood out for participating in political and military events that he witnessed or was the protagonist of, including the meeting of Bolívar and San Martín in Guayaquil, the battles of Pichincha and Ayacucho, the conflict between the Liberator and Santander, the Córdoba rebellion and the dissolution of Gran Colombia.

His death occurred as a result of a diphtheria epidemic, which hit Paita at that time. His body was buried in a mass grave in the local cemetery and all his possessions, to avoid contagion, were incinerated, including an important part of Bolívar's love letters and documents from Gran Colombia that he still kept in his custody.

Since July 5, 2010, his symbolic remains have been resting in the National Pantheon.
