The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA), with the support of allies of the Wagner Group of the Russian Federation, retained control of the strategic northern city of Kidal, after carrying out large scale airfield operations against armed groups that had occupied the area for five months, according to Telesur.

According to the statement issued by the General Staff of the Army, the military maneuvers made it possible to neutralize irregular formations, destroy their supply networks and restore territorial security in the region, asking the inhabitants to remain calm and “continue their precious collaboration with the defense and security forces.”

For their part, the spokespersons of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) argued that the withdrawal of its fighters responds to a temporary measure aimed at preventing casualties among the civilian population, after denouncing the use of aerial bombardments by the Malian military command and its international allies.

Military operations remain active in the eastern and central theaters of operations through the so-called Operation Dougoukoloko, through which the Government of the African nation seeks to guarantee national sovereignty, protect borders and protect the Malian people from criminal actions committed by extremist groups.
