On March 13, 1941, the Palestinian poet Mahmud Darwish was born, who was considered the official poet of the Palestinian national cause, and whose admiration in Arab countries has no end.

All Palestinian factions agree to recognize Darwish as a spiritual reference, and as the most outstanding modern Arab poet. His themes unite feelings of anguish, love and melancholy.

I'm from there -or I'm from there, according to the translation- is his most emblematic poem, which expresses the invocation of the land lost since exile.

It was a living example of revolutionary perseverance, active in the creation of a Palestinian State. He collaborated in drafting the Declaration of Independence of his people and was a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) until 1993, when he resigned in protest of the peace accords with Israel, which were considered an act of liquidation of the national rights of the Palestinian people.

The Eternal Commander Hugo Chávez was inspired by his memorable poem to close his letter to the then Secretary of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-Moon, about Palestine's request to be recognized as a full-fledged State.

“On this earth there is something that deserves to live: on this earth is the mother of beginnings, the mother of endings. It was called Palestine... It's still called Palestine,” the Commander quoted.
