On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in the Indian city of Porbandar Mohandas.
His academic training took place in Great Britain, where he graduated as a lawyer, and began his political activity in South Africa, where he fought for the recognition of the rights of the Indian minority.
From a very young age, Gandhi identified himself with the independence sectors that were fighting against British rule and already in the 1930s he became the central figure of that movement, especially after the famous 'salt march'.
Declared defender of Ahimsa, a philosophical concept that advocates non-violence and respect for life, Gandhi saw years of efforts crowned in 1947 when India declared independence from the metropolis.
Once independence was achieved, Gandhi tried to reform Indian society, starting by integrating the lowest castes (the Shudras or slaves, the pariahs or untouchables and the Mleches or barbarians), and by developing rural areas.
On January 30, 1948, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a right-wing ultranationalist upset by Gandhi's call for peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims, in the midst of strong clashes between the two groups.
