Lara State is preparing for a unique cultural celebration on June 13, when communities will come together in the Tamunangue, also known as Sones de Negros.
This event, which combines singing, dance and theater, is a devotional expression in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, a saint on the Catholic calendar who is adopted by the state's Afro-descendant population.
During the festivities, the eight traditional Tamunangue sounds resonate with voices that have crossed time and the ocean, which carry with them the essence of Africa and Spain among them. Yiyivamos, La Bella, El Seis, La Juruminga and Perrendiga are just a few examples of how these traditions have been preserved and adapted over the years.
In this way, these dances include phrases that are not only part of the song, but are also a reminder of the African and Spanish roots that are part of the cultural fabric of Venezuela. These elements are fundamental to understanding the importance of Tamunangue in Larense's identity.
