The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) of the Federative Republic of Brazil won eight of its candidates for the general elections, consolidating four federal and four state seats in alliance with the Workers' Party (PT), according to Telesur.
With this result, the peasant organization successfully completed half of the 16 candidates it ran for in the electoral contest, achieving strategic legislative representation for the defense of agrarian struggles in the South American giant.
The advance of the popular movement in the National Congress and in regional legislative assemblies represents a milestone for popular sectors, who seek to promote historic demands for access to land, food sovereignty and social justice from parliamentary spaces.
The leadership of the MST and the social forces valued this institutional reach as an organizational triumph of the working people, which will strengthen the legislative agenda in favor of agrarian reform and the rights of rural communities vis-a-vis the large estates.
