The Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, one of the great Latin American writers of the 20th century, was born on May 16, 1917 in Apulco, Jalisco.

Rulfo stood out because his literary work presents a combination of reality and fantasy in settings in his country, offering something new, which awakens the interest of readers to the point that it becomes a universal reference and receives praise from renowned writers Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Luis Borges.

The Flaming Plain, Pedro Páramo and The Golden Rooster are part of the work of Rulfo, winner of the Mexican National Literature Awards (1970) and Prince of Asturias for Literature (1983). He died in Mexico on January 7, 1986.
