The journalist and presenter of the N+ news program on Televisa Guadalajara, Jaime Barrera, who had been kidnapped since Monday, was found alive this Wednesday, as confirmed by the Mexican Army and the Jalisco State Attorney's Office.
“My dad is already with us. My heart knew that it always returns home. Thank you to everyone,” wrote the communicator's daughter, Itzul Barrera, on social media.
In a statement, the Jalisco Public Prosecutor's Office explained that the journalist “was found to be in good health”, but “he will continue with cabinet and field investigations to clarify the facts and capture those who are responsible.”
In an interview with Televisa after his release, Barrera clarified that his captors released him in the town of Magdalena, almost 80 kilometers northwest of Guadalajara, and then the authorities found him.
He also pointed out that the kidnapping occurred because of his journalistic work, so he will request to join the Government's Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.
The journalist, who also collaborates with Canal 44, Milenio and El Informador, was last seen on Monday at 14:00 local (20:00 local) outside a radio station, where between three and four people, at least one with long weapons, violently kidnapped him, according to the Jalisco Attorney's Office.
The Mexican Media Alliance, made up of 60 media outlets across the country, had condemned this kidnapping.
